Jazz guitar player Joe Cinderella began to play the guitar at the age of nine without any formal jazz guitar instruction. His first jazz guitar influences were Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian. His father, a musician who worked in the music publishing business, gave him his first guitar. It was during his late teens and early twenties that Cinderella, while serving in the US army, began to seriously study music and composi­tion using jazz guitar books. He had studied jazz guitar with Frank Staffa for five years and then attended Essex University graduating with a degree in music. Joe Cinderella began a career as a solo jazz guitar player in the early 1950s. In 1954 he recorded an album with singer Chris Connors which received high critical acclaim. In 1977 he instigated the Jazz Studies programme at the Victorian College of Arts. In 1976 he founded his own jazz guitar school and since that time has written several jazz guitar instruction books. In 1984 he formed a jazz quintet which played in local clubs and restau­rants. Bruce Clarke is one of the most important gui­tarists to have come from Australia.
